Xavier is a seasoned distributed systems engineer and Open-source enthusiast. Fighting entropy while scaling up SaaS products got them obsessed with developer experience and reliability. After two decades of using and contributing to Open-source, the letsblock.it project is Xavier’s first attempt at building a sustainable community around an Open-source project.
Designing an open-source project for low maintenance
To make the Internet less cluttered, the Let's Block It project allows you to hide low-quality content and useless nags with uBlock Origin. It is both a community-maintained filter templates collection and a web application where you can build your personal list and sync it across your devices. When I started the Let's Block It project a year ago, I knew it was targeting a niche audience, and I intentionally designed it to be sustainable as a weekend project. This included of course delegating the authentication to Ory Cloud. In this talk, I will go through my design process and the lessons I take away from this project.
